MONTICELLO, Ark.—Host Arkansas-Monticello started with a bang, scoring 10 first-inning runs in the first game of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader, and they scored in the bottom of the eighth to win the nightcap over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs. In between, the two schools combined for 11 consecutive shutout innings.
The first-place Cotton Blossoms (37-6, 14-2 GSC) batted around on 10 hits, three errors, and a hit batter as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game one.
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) settled the Lady Bucs (14-20, 4-12) down, only allowing three baserunners after escaping the first inning.
UAM pitcher Kayla Jackson (19-3) dominated on the other side, holding the Lady Bucs to just two singles as she struck out four to earn the shutout victory.
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) and
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) provided the Lady Bucs' hits.
In the nightcap, Brewer picked up where McEachron left off, keeping UAM scoreless through seven innings on three hits and four walks while striking out five. UAM's Randa Perry scattered four hits and a walk as she blanked the Lady Bucs in eight innings with six strikeouts.
After the Lady Bucs couldn't capitalize on a
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) leadoff single in the eighth, UAM finally got to Brewer, scoring the winning run as four straight batters reached base.
The Lady Bucs take on Rhodes Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Collierville High School before heading to Decatur, Ala., for the Gulf South Conference Crossover, where they will face all six GSC East schools over four days.
