ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Host Ouachita Baptist moved closer to securing its second consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament berth by sweeping the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday night, winning 3-0 in the opener and taking a 9-7 win in eight innings in the nightcap after the Lady Bucs rallied from seven runs down in the last two innings.
In the opener, OBU (35-21, 13-15 GSC) pitcher Kristen Rigsbee (18-8) kept the Lady Bucs (16-28, 5-19) off balance all game, holding CBU to just three hits and two walks as she struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout.
The Lady Bucs loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, but Rigsbee struck out the last two batters to get out of the threat. CBU put two more runners on with two out in the fourth, but Rigsbee drew a groundout to escape danger again.
This time, OBU made the Lady Bucs pay, using a single, an error, a wild pitch, and a passed ball to manufacture the only run Rigsbee would need in the bottom of the fourth. Solo homers in the fifth and sixth set the final margin at 3-0.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS),
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS), and
Jessica DiVittorio (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) each singled for the Lady Bucs.
In the nightcap, OBU blitzed the Lady Bucs for five first-inning runs on three singles, a double, and a homer, and they tacked on two more in the second on a Sarah Bell double to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
OBU pitcher Kayci Wilson kept the Lady Bucs off the scoreboard for the first five innings, allowing just three singles and a hit batter. But in the sixth, the Lady Bucs' fortunes changed as Nelson legged out a bunt single. Two errors pushed a run across and put runners on first and third, and
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) smoked a two-run double to cut the lead to 7-3.
After another scoreless inning from
Leigh Ann Henry (Nashville, Tenn./David Lipscomb HS), the Lady Bucs started their seventh-inning rally with a
Shanae Farrell (Memphis, Tenn./Whitehaven HS) bunt single. Nelson singled her home, and singles from Ambers,
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS), Schmidt, and DiVittorio brought in the tying run.
Henry pitched around a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. After the Lady Bucs failed to capitalize on two walks in the top of the eighth, OBU relief pitcher Sara Hanson blasted a two-out, two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Farrell went 3-for-3 with a walk in the game, while Schimdt was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Nelson and Ambers each collected two hits and two RBI.
The Lady Bucs and Lady Tigers meet again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader. The Lady Bucs wrap up the season Tuesday at 2 p.m. as they celebrate Senior Day with a doubleheader against Lambuth.
