COLLIERVILLE—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won the first game of Tuesday night's doubleheader 5-0, but Rhodes claimed a 5-4 win in the nightcap as Sara Bowen hit a three-run walkoff homer.
The Lady Bucs (15-21) scored in the first inning of the opener as
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) hit a sacrifice fly. They tacked on three runs in the third as
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) walked, stole second, and came home on an
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) single. Brewer scored as Dorsett hit a grounder to second base, and the second baseman threw home too late to get Brewer. The catcher bobbled the throw, allowing
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) to score to lift the Lady Bucs to a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs scored the game's final run as Dorsett scored on a two-out error after she singled.
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) picked up the win, shutting out Rhodes for four innings on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) earned the save with three hitless innings, striking out five as she only allowed one walk.
King, Alyse Brewer, and Nelson collected two hits each. Dorsett drove in two runs, while Alyse Brewer scored twice.
The Lady Bucs struck first again in the nightcap, using a pair of errors to generate two runs in the top of the second. Rhodes (20-12) scored its first run of the day on a pair of third-inning singles.
The Lady Bucs added a run to the lead in the fifth as King singled, stole second, and scored on a Dorsett double. The Lady Bucs left the bases loaded, however, three of their 11 runners stranded on the day.
Rhodes catcher Kelli Zomer tripled and scored in the fifth to cut the lead back to 3-2, but the Lady Bucs pushed the margin back to 4-2 as Nelson hit a leadoff double and scored on a groundout.
The Lady Bucs appeared to have the game put away in the seventh, retiring the first two batters before the Lynx stayed alive with an error. Rebekah Moore singled, and Sara Bowen followed with a line shot to left field that just cleared the fence, giving Rhodes the 5-4 win.
Alyse Brewer and
Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) collected two hits each, while Dorsett drove in two runs.
The Lady Bucs hit the road for the Gulf South Conference Crossover at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Ala., where they will face all six GSC East Division teams over four days. They open up Crossover play against Valdosta State Thursday at 4 p.m.
