Schmidt's Single Lifts Lady Bucs Past UWG 6-5

Kathleen Nelson went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Lady Bucs won 6-5 over West Georgia Friday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference Crossover.
DECATUR, Ala.—Christian Brothers University freshman Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss., Center Hill HS) hit a game-winning pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a 6-5 win over West Georgia Friday afternoon at the Gulf South Conference Crossover.

The Wolves (13-34, 1-14 GSC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Meagan Sitton hit a three-run triple down the right field line, but the Lady Bucs (16-22, 5-13) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) reached on an error, and singles by Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) and Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) loaded the bases with none out.  Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) hit an RBI single, and Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) put CBU in front with a three-run double to left-center.

Sitton gave UWG the lead again in the top of the fourth as she hit a two-run double.  UWG's lead held up until the sixth, when Nelson singled Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) home for the tying run.  McEachron pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to set the stage for Schmidt's heroics.

Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) drew a one-out walk to start the rally, and Dorsett followed with a single to left.  Schmidt followed with the game-winner, a single to left field, to give CBU the victory.

The walk-off win is the Lady Bucs' second of the season after winning 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth at Bland Field in March.

Nelson paced the Lady Bucs' offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Ambers was 2-for-2 with a walk.  McEachron picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings of relief as she struck out five with no walks.

The Lady Bucs continue Crossover play tomorrow as they play West Florida at noon before facing West Alabama at 2 p.m.
