JACKSON, Tenn.—Host Union won a pair of one-run games over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs in the season-opening doubleheader for both schools Thursday afternoon, winning 5-4 and 3-2.
In the opener, Union (2-0) plated three runs in the bottom of the first as a walk, an RBI double, and a single set the stage for a two-run Katie Davis double. The Lady Bucs (0-2) answered with two in the top of the second inning.
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) led off with a double, and
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) was hit by a pitch. Both would score on a two-run double from
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS).
The Lady Bucs took their first lead of the season in the top of the third inning, as an error, a single, and two fielders' choices with no outs brought a run in and left the bases loaded for
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) to push a run home on a bases-loaded walk.
Union tied the game back up at four on an Amber Hayes homer to left with one out in the bottom of the third, and they scored the game-winning run four batters later on an RBI groundout by Brooke Thomas.
Schmidt went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Lady Bucs, while Nelson drove in two runs. Adams tossed three and two-thirds scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs took an early lead as
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) reached on an error and scored on another error in the top of the first inning. Union tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Tobie Joy singled and scored on a Shelby Lamb base hit.
Neither team would score until extra innings. Nelson was placed on second as the International Tie Breaker runner for the Lady Bucs to start the inning.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) bunted her to third, and she scored on a King groundout.
The Lady Bucs committed three errors in the bottom of the inning, with a fielding error and a throwing error bringing the first run home. The game-winner scored on another error with none out after a Joy single.
Story and Adams each went 2-for-3 in the second game.
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) allowed just one earned run in seven innings, scattering 10 hits and three walks.
The Lady Bucs make their home opener Saturday at noon when they host Millsaps.
