Lady Bucs Sweep Lady Eagles 1-0, 5-4

Kaylea Brewer struck out 11 batters in a two-hit shutout as the Lady Bucs swept Williams Baptist 1-0 and 11-4 Saturday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept a pair of one-run games from visiting Williams Baptist Saturday afternoon at Bland Field, taking a 1-0 win in the opener and winning 5-4 in game two.

In the first game, the Lady Bucs (3-5) scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning.  Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) singled up the middle and stole second base, coming around to score on a Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) single.

That would be all the run support Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) would need as she whiffed 11 batters in her best outing of the young season.  She only allowed two singles, three walks, and a hit batter, carrying a no-hitter until two out in the fifth inning.  She didn't allow a runner to reach third base in the game.

Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) posted two of the Lady Bucs' seven hits as she was the only player to collect multiple hits in the game.

In the second game, Williams Baptist (3-3) scored first, using a single, and error, and a passed ball to score the game's first run in the top of the first.  Mallarie Lee hit an RBI double in the second to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 edge.

The Lady Bucs answered in the fifth inning, converting two hit batters, a walk, an error, and a sacrifice fly into two runs to tie the game.  The Lady Eagles retook the lead in the top of the sixth with a single and a double, and two errors gave them another run in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Bucs would win the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh.  Brewer led off with a double and moved to third on a Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single.  Nelson singled Story home, and an Ambers single was followed by an intentional walk to set up the force at any base.  Nelson stole home on a delayed steal to win the game.

The Lady Bucs hit the road Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they visit Cumberland.  Their next home game is set for Wednesday, March 9, when they host Missouri S&T at 1 p.m.
