LEBANON, Tenn.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost a pair of one-run games to host Cumberland Sunday afternoon, dropping the opener 2-1 in eight innings and squandering a four-run lead in a 5-4 loss in game two.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (3-7) struck first in the second inning with a pair of singles followed by a two-out error. Cumberland (7-2) tied it up in the fourth with a single, a walk, and a double, and neither team scored again until the extra frame.
Two Lady Bucs struck out with the international tiebreaker runner on third to end the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Cumberland bunted the runner to third and scored the winner on a Victoria Bennett single.
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS),
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS), and
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) each collected two hits in the game.
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) took the loss despite a strong performance, allowing four hits with five strikeouts over seven and a third innings.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs scored first in the third as
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) hit an RBI double and scored on an Ambers single. They tacked on two more in the sixth after King started a two-out rally with a double. Two walks loaded the bases, and RBI singles from
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) and Brewer pushed the lead to 4-0.
The Bulldogs started the bottom of the inning with three doubles and a single, scoring three quick runs. A pair of groundouts scored the tying run, and an error followed by two more singles brought home the game-winning run.
The Lady Bucs have a week off before they visit Lane Monday, March 7. They come home Wednesday, March 9, against Missouri S&T at 1 p.m.
