Brewer's Heroics Cap 13-12 Comeback Win

Kaylea Brewer drove in the winning run as the Lady Bucs won 13-12 in eight innings over Missouri S&T after trailing by as many as six runs.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied from two separate six-run deficits as they claimed a wild 13-12 win over Missouri S&T Thursday afternoon at Bland Field in a game that took more than three hours to complete.

Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) proved to be the hero, blasting a would-be walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth after the Lady Bucs (6-7) had rallied from yet another deficit, 12-10, in the eighth.  However, Brewer and Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) did not complete the trip around the bases, so Brewer was credited with an RBI double and the final score was set at 13-12.

The Lady Miners (1-10) took a commanding lead early as their first six batters came around to score, converting six hits, a walk, and an error into six runs in the first.  The Lady Bucs cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on two hits, two walks, and two hit batters.

A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly brought another run home in the bottom of the second, trimming the lead to 6-4.  But the Lady Miners answered with four more runs in the top of the fourth on a walk, three singles, and a double, pushing their lead to 10-4.

The Lady Bucs began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Three straight singles loaded the bases, and Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) hit a two-run single past third base.  Brewer followed with a three-run homer to right-center, cutting the lead to 10-9.

Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) drew a one-out walk in the sixth inning, and Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) drove her in with a double to left-center to tie the game.  The game remained tied at 10-all until Maggie Schroeder launched a two-run homer in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the inning, King laid down a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error, allowing the international tiebreaker runner to score.  She moved to third on a Joiner single and scored the tying run on a Dorsett sacrifice fly.  Schmidt was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Brewer's game-winning hit.

The baserunning mistakes cost Brewer a pair of school records.  Her six RBI would have set the school single-game record, and it would have been only the fifth two-homer game in school history.

Joiner went 3-for-4 with two runs.  Brewer and Dorsett were each 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs.  King went 2-for-3 with four runs, matching the school single-game record.

Brewer was also the winning pitcher, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks over three and a third innings.

The Lady Bucs host No. 11 Arkansas-Monticello for their first GSC West series this weekend.  The Lady Bucs host 1 p.m. doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday against UAM.
