ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with host Henderson State Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 6-5 before dropping a 12-4 decision in an error-filled second game.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) started the first game by tying the school home run record with her fifth, driving in
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) after a leadoff single.
The Lady Reddies (14-9, 4-2 GSC West) tied the game with a walk and three singles in the bottom of the second inning, but the Lady Bucs (8-12, 1-5) took advantage of back-to-back errors in a four-run fifth inning.
The Lady Reddies scored three in the bottom of the fifth inning, but
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) pitched out of trouble with a popout and a strikeout, and she kept them off the board in the final two innings to earn the win. Brewer allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Joiner went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) also collected two hits.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs committed four errors in the bottom of the first inning, digging a six-run hole as all runs were unearned.
After HSU tacked on a run in the second, the Lady Bucs clawed their way back into the game. After a Nelson walk in the third inning, King hit an RBI double and came home on a pair of wild pitches. In the fourth, they took advantage of a two-out error to plate two more and cut the margin to 7-4, but the Lady Reddies put it out of reach from there.
HSU scored one run in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game.
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) was the only Lady Buc to collect multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a run.
The Lady Bucs and Lady Reddies meet again Sunday at noon.
