ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs couldn't make a pair of early one-run leads stand up as host Henderson State swept them 10-1 and 4-1 in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
In the opener,
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) homered in the top of the first to give the Lady Bucs (7-14, 1-7 GSC) an early lead, but HSU (11-14, 6-2) scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
In the third, HSU turned four walks, a hit batter, and a pair of hits into four runs, and a Melissa Decker blasted a grand slam in the sixth to end the game at 10-1.
Decker, also the winning pitcher, held the Lady Bucs to four hits — King's homer, two
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) singles, and a
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) single.
In game two, Joiner opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as she singled and scored on a
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) squeeze bunt.
The Lady Reddies answered in the bottom of the inning as a Katey Gorsage homer knotted the game at 1. The game remained in a 1-1 tie until the bottom of the sixth inning, when they turned two walks and two hits into a three-run inning to claim the victory.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) collected two hits and a stolen base for the Lady Bucs in the second game.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host Ouachita Baptist for a GSC West doubleheader.
