DECATUR, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs fell 8-3 to No. 1 Alabama-Huntsville and 7-3 to North Alabama in the final day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover.
In the first game, the top-ranked Chargers (34-1-1, 18-0 GSC) cashed in on two walks, two hit batters, and an error to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as they never trailed. The Lady Bucs (10-24, 3-17) pulled within a run in the top of the second as
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) blasted a two-run homer to right-center.
UAH tacked on two more in the bottom of the third inning on three singles to push the lead to 5-2. A
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) homer to right cut the lead back to 5-3, but UAH scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to set the final margin.
The Lady Bucs were held to four hits in the game, one each from Dorsett, King,
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS), and
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS).
In the second game, the two teams were even until North Alabama (13-21, 8-10) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
The Lady Bucs took an early lead in the top of the first as
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) doubled and cam home on a Joiner sacrifice fly. The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run on a bases-loaded hit batter.
Joiner brought home two more runs in the top of the third to put the Lady Bucs back on top when she brought Nelson and
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) home with a two-run double. But again, UNA would answer with an identical two runs in the bottom of the inning on a hit batter, two single, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.
The game remained knotted at three until the bottom of the sixth inning. A hit batter, and a catcher's interference put two runners on for Sarah Corn, who hit a two-run single to break the tie. A walk, two more singles, and a wild pitch scored two more runs to set the final margin.
Nelson, Story, and Joiner collected one hit each in the game for the Lady Bucs. Nelson scored twice, while Joiner drove in three.
