CLEVELAND, Miss.-Two Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs combined for a four-hit shutout to win game two 3-0 at Delta State Saturday afternoon, salvaging a split after they dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in extra innings in the first game.
The Lady Bucs (8-17, 2-10) did their scoring early in the nightcap. In the second inning,
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) led off with a single to left, and she came home on an
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) double for the only run CBU pitchers
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) would need.
They tacked on two more runs in the third inning.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) blasted a leadoff homer to right to start the inning.
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) followed with a single. She moved to third on a throwing error, and she came home on a Brewer RBI double to score the game's final run.
Brewer went 2-for-3 in the game. Adams started, earning the win as she went five innings, allowing three hits and no walks with two strikeouts. McEachron tossed the final two innings, allowing a hit and a walk as she struck out one for her first save of the season.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs came from behind twice, but they were unable to push a go-ahead run across.
DSU (10-21, 2-8) struck first in the bottom of the third inning as Taylor Hughes walked and scored on a Victoria Combs double.
In the top of the fifth, Nelson knotted the game as she launched a homer to left-center, but DSU regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Hughes singled and scored on an Angela Carden single.
The Lady Bucs tied it again in the top of the sixth inning as
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) singled, stole second, and came home on a two-out Brewer double.
The game remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the ninth inning as the Lady Bucs left the bases loaded in the seventh and a runner on third in the eighth. In the ninth,
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) singled and moved to second on a one-out wild pitch, but she was stranded there, and the Lady Statesmen converted for the win.
Hughes again started the inning with a single. After she was erased on a fielder's choice, two more singles loaded the bases, and Carden laced a single into center for the win.
Brewer and Joiner each went 2-for-4 in the game, while King was 2-for-5.
DSU and CBU meet again Sunday at noon for the second doubleheader of the series.
