MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University senior outfielder
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn., Bolton HS), the Lady Bucs' single-season and career home run leader, celebrated her senior day appropriately Saturday, hitting a walkoff home run to cap a doubleheader sweep of visiting Southern Arkansas as CBU won 7-4 in the opener before Nelson's walk-off shot gave them a 10-9 win in eight innings.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (12-26, 5-19) used a three-run first inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. SAU (14-39, 8-22) scored twice in the top of the first on a Heather Allison homer, but the Lady Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning. Nelson was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) single. After
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) singled,
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) hit a two-run double to put the Lady Bucs in front.
A second-inning
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) homer extended the lead to 4-2, and Brewer scored on a
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) single in the third to put the Lady Bucs on top 5-2. After SAU scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4,
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit a two-run homer to set the final margin in the bottom of the inning.
Joiner went 3-for-3 with two runs, while Dorsett and Brewer each drove in two.
In the nightcap, SAU took control early with two runs in the first and three in the second.
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) hit a three-run double in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 5-4 after Nelson had hit an RBI single, and King doubled and scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the third.
SAU's Chelsea Knox hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to break the deadlock, and a pair of singles in the fifth extended their lead to 9-5. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Lady Bucs answered with four runs to tie. Joiner and King singled to start the threat, and an Adams double brought Joiner in. Dorsett blasted a three-run homer to left to tie the game, and neither team would score until Nelson's heroics.
Both teams stranded a runner in scoring position in the seventh, and in the top of the eighth, Adams pitched around a two-out walk. Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Nelson blasted an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left for the game-winning homer, extending two school records with her eighth of the season and the 16th of her career.
Adams and Joiner went 3-for-4 for the game, while Nelson, Dorsett, King, and
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) collected two hits each.
The Lady Bucs honored their four seniors, Nelson, King, Ambers, and Brewer, in pregame Senior Day ceremonies.
The Lady Bucs return to action Tuesday night at 5 p.m. as they travel to Wynne, Ark., to face Williams Baptist.
