Lady Bucs Swept at ATU

The Lady Bucs were swept 8-0 and 9-1 Friday afternoon at first-place Arkansas Tech.
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—Host Arkansas Tech clinched the final Gulf South Conference West Division crown as they swept the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 8-0 and 9-1 Friday afternoon.

Two big innings provided the win in the first game, as ATU (31-17, 21-7 GSC) scored four runs each in the fourth and sixth innings.  In the fourth, they used three hits and two walks to push four across, and a Hayley Hudson grand slam in the sixth set the final margin and ended the game.

A Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) bunt single in the fourth inning accounted for the only baserunner of the game for the Lady Bucs (12-28, 5-21) against ATU pitcher Amy Horne, who struck out seven.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs struck first as Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) singled Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) home after a two-out walk and a stolen base.  King was tagged out at third after an error, ending the threat.  ATU kept with the four-run innings theme, plating four on two walks, a fielder's choice, a homer, a triple in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.

In the fourth, they tacked on four more on six hits, and they ended it in the sixth by scoring after a pair of errors.

In the second game, Joiner, King, Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS), and Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) each collected a single for the Lady Bucs.

The Lady Bucs' rainout with Ouachita Baptist will not be made up.  The GSC only requires makeup games if they are necessary in determining who qualifies for the GSC Tournament.  With Arkansas-Monticello's sweep of Delta State, Ouachita Baptist clinched a berth in the tournament.  The Lady Bucs wrap up the 2011 season tomorrow afternoon with the second doubleheader of the series against Arkansas Tech at noon.
