CLEVELAND, Miss.—Host Delta State swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Sunday afternoon, winning a 2-1 nailbiter in the first game and scoring nine runs in the last two innings for a 12-4 win in game two.
In the opener, pitching dominated early as neither team scored in the first five innings. The Lady Bucs (8-19, 2-12 GSC West) scored the game's first run in the top of the sixth inning.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) reached on an error to start the inning. A
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) single pushed her to third, and
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) dropped down a squeeze bunt to score her.
The Lady Statesmen (12-21, 4-8) would equalize in the bottom of the inning when Emily Todd hit a leadoff homer. They scored the winner in the seventh as Katie Herbert drew a walk and scored on two doubles.
The loss spoiled a strong effort from
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS), who surrendered two runs in six and two-third innings, allowing seven hits and two walks.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs started well as
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) started the game with a homer to right-center. The homer was her third of the weekend, the fifth of the season, and the 13th of her career as she moved one ahead of teammate
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) for first on the career home run list at CBU.
They tacked on another run in the frame as King scored on a Brewer double. DSU turned a walk, a passed ball, and a pair of singles into a run in the bottom of the second, and they took the lead in the third as a two-base error pushed two runs across.
The Lady Bucs tied it back up in the fourth when
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) singled and came home on a Nelson sacrifice fly. They took the lead back in the fifth inning when King singled and scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Lady Statesmen exploded for six runs on four singles, two fielder's choices, and a double. They ended the game in the sixth when they added three runs on a homer, a walk, and three singles.
King paced the Lady Bucs' offense in the game with two hits and two runs, while Nelson drove in two.
