Lady Bucs Pick Up Two Dramatic Wins at Crossover

Kathleen Nelson hit the game-winning home run in a 4-3 win over Lambuth Friday, and she scored two runs in a 6-5 win over West Georgia in the second game.
DECATUR, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won a pair of games Friday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference Crossover, winning 4-3 over Lambuth in the first game of the day and claiming a dramatic 6-5 win in the nightcap against West Georgia.

In the second game, the bats dominated the early part of the game.  The Lady Bucs (10-20, 4-13 GSC) scored first as Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) walked to start the game and scored on a Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) sacrifice fly.  In the bottom of the first, however, West Georgia (17-18, 6-9) plated a pair on two hits, an error, a wild pitch, and a double-steal to take a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Bucs answered in the top of the third, taking the lead for good as they scored three.  Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) reached on an error to start the inning.  King followed with a single, and a Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) triple brought both home to tie the game.  Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Adams and extend the lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the third, the Wolves used a single, a walk, and an error to cut the lead back to 4-3 with a run.

Nelson scored again in the top of the fourth to push the lead back to two runs as she singled to left and came home on a three-base error.  The Lady Bucs appeared to put it away in the top of the seventh when three straight singles from Joiner, King, and Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) brought in another run to take a 6-3 edge.

The Wolves had one more rally in their bats, however.  Kelsey Francen started the inning with a single, and Nicole Yancey was hit by a pitch.  Kaley Sullivan doubled into the left field corner to bring the Wolves within one, and a groundout advanced her to third with one out.  Ashlyn Newman hit a fly ball to center, and Sullivan came home for the apparent tying run.  Upon appeal after the celebration, however, Sullivan was called out for leaving third base before the catch, giving the Lady Bucs the win.

Joiner and King each went 2-for-3 in the game, with Joiner and Nelson scoring two runs each.  Adams drove in a pair.  Brewer went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks.

In the opener, Nelson blasted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to lift the Lady Bucs past Lambuth (2-22) despite trailing for most of the game.  More details of the Lambuth game will be posted when they are available.

The Lady Bucs play two more in the Crossover tomorrow, facing West Florida at noon and West Alabama at 2 p.m.
