Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—Visiting Union swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Tuesday afternoon, winning the opener 5-4 and claiming the second game 5-0.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (1-3) struck first with a three-run fourth inning.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) started the rally with a one-out triple to left.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) laid down a squeeze bunt and reached first safely after Union (3-1) tried to throw out Joiner at home and failed. An error and a walk set the stage for a
Rachel Kelly (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) two-run single to center.
Union answered with three of their own in the fifth on two walks, a single, an error, and two wild pitches. They would take the lead in the sixth when Sam Giesler homered to straightaway center, and they added a critical insurance run in the seventh. DeShuni Sanders led off with a triple and scored on a groundout to extend the Union lead to 5-3.
#Amy Gracia legged out a bunt single to start the bottom of the inning for the Lady Bucs, and
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) reached on a soft popup down the first base line that was deflected into foul territory after landing between the Union pitcher and first baseman. Joiner smashed a double, her third hit of the game, to center, scoring Gracia, but Rosa-Ramon was tagged out at the plate trying to score the tying run. Union went to the bullpen for Caroline George, who ended the game with a groundout and a strikeout.
Joiner was 3-for-4 and Kelly drove in two runs in the game.
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) went the distance in the circle, allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks.
In the second game, Union hurler Kelly Robey dominated, holding the Lady Bucs to a fifth-inning Joiner single and a seventh-inning Rosa-Ramon walk. She struck out 10. Her teammates gave her all the run support she would need in the third inning, plating four runs on a walk, a hit batter, an error, two doubles, and a single. They added one more in the sixth on a pair of singles and an error.
The Lady Bucs return to Bland Field Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they take on Missouri Baptist.
