Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs claimed an 8-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Missouri Baptist Friday, but the visitors scratched out a 1-0 win in the second game.
The Lady Bucs (2-4) set the tone quickly in the bottom of the first inning in the opener.
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) laid down a bunt single and moved to second on a
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) single to right.
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) started what would be a big day at the plate with an RBI double to left-center, scoring Gracia. An RBI groundout brought Canizaro home to give the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead.
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) cruised through the first four innings, only allowing two singels and a hit batter but not allowing them to score. In the fifth, however, the Spartans (1-1) mounted a rally. Miranda Romero led off with a single to left, and Jena Trombley reached on a fielder's choice as the Lady Bucs tried unsuccessfully to force Romero at second. A walk loaded the bases with one out for Corey Pitchford. Pitchford lifted a fly ball to left field, and a perfect throw from
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hosed Romero at the plate to preserve the shutout.
The Lady Bucs batted around in the bottom of the inning.
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) led off with a single. After a hit batter, Gracia reached on another bunt single, and Canizaro followed with a two-run single to left-center. Rosa-Ramon smoked a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 6-0. An infield single and a walk loaded the bases again, but a pair of groundouts ended the inning with no further scoring. After McEachron retired the side in order in the sixth, the Lady Bucs ended the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) singled and stole both second and third, scoring when Gracia reached on an error. Back-to-back singles from Canizaro and Rosa-Ramon brought Gracia home for the game-ending run.
Rosa-Ramon and Canizaro each went 3-for-4, with Rosa-Ramon driving in four runs and Canizaro both scoring and driving in two. Gracia was 2-for-4 with three runs, and Grooms scored twice.
McEachron held the Spartans to three hits and a walk as she earned her first career shutout. She struck out three in the game.
In the second game, pitching dominated, as only four runners reached base for each team. Schmidt singled in the third but was stranded on third base. After retiring the first nine batters in order, game two pitcher
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) allowed a leadoff walk to Megan Wildhaber. She stole second and, with two out, she scored on a first and third double-steal play before pinch runner Ashley Kroener was tagged out.
The Lady Bucs put a runner on in each of the last three innings, but they were unable to score. Gonzalez reached on a one-out single but was called out on appeal for missing second base on her way back to first base on a flyout. Grooms was hit by a pitch in the sixth, but she was caught stealing third for the third out. In the seventh,
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) hit a two-out infield single, but she was stranded there.
Adams took the hard-luck loss, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks in seven innings with four strikeouts.
The Lady Bucs return to action next Saturday, March 3, when they host Evangel in a noon doubleheader.
