Lady Bucs Split Twinbill With UNA

Kim Adams allowed one run on three hits over eight and a third innings as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with North Alabama Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs clinched their first 3-0 Gulf South Conference start in school history with a 5-1 win in Sunday's first game against North Alabama before the visitors won 4-1 in the second game.

The Lady Bucs (7-9, 3-1 GSC) needed to rally from behind again after UNA (11-6, 2-2) struck first with a run in the top of the first.  Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) started the Lady Bucs' rally with a fourth-inning single, and she scored when Rachel Kelly (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) ripped a line drive past third base to tie the game.  In the fifth, the Lady Bucs would take the lead with a one-out rally.  Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) doubled to left and moved to third on an Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) bunt single.  Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) singled Gonzalez home, and Grooms scored when Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

CBU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) led off with an infield single and Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) worked a walk.  After a sacrifice bunt and a lineout, Gracia hit a two-run single to left to extend the CBU lead to 5-1.

Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) pitched a gem, holding UNA to one run on three singles and four walks.

In the second game, UNA's Shelby Goodman broke up a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a towering two-out home run down the left field line.  The Lady Bucs answered in the bottom of the fifth when Story and Grooms singled, setting up an RBI double down the left field line from Gracia.  Only one CBU hitter reached base in the final two innings after the Lions took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two out, and back-to-back singles by Cassandra McKinney and Goodman brought home three runs to set the final margin.

Story went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs.  Adams tossed an inning and a third of relief, retiring all four batters she faced.

The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host No. 5 Alabama-Huntsville for a doubleheader.
