Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs defeated their first nationally-ranked opponent since 2005 and remained in second place in the Gulf South Conference as they upset No. 5 Alabama-Huntsville 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Monday before UAH claimed the second game 7-2.
As they did in their three previous GSC victories, the Lady Bucs (8-10, 4-2 GSC) needed to rally from an early deficit, as UAH (18-7, 2-2) struck first in the top of the first inning on a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single.
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) escaped a bases-loaded two-out jam with only the first run scoring.
Her teammates picked her up in the bottom of the second inning.
Rachel Kelly (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) started the rally with a one-out single up the middle, and
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) followed with a single to center.
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) singled to right to bring Kelly home, and an error allowed Schmidt to move up to third.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Schmidt for the game's final run. Adams kept the Chargers off balance, stranding nine runners as she held UAH to one run on nine hits and three walks in seven innings.
Story went 2-for-2 for the Lady Bucs, while five other batters each collected a single.
The win was the Lady Bucs' first over a ranked opponent since April 16, 2005, when they beat No. 11 UAH 4-1. The Lady Bucs had only one prior win in school history over a top-five opponent, when they won 6-4 at No. 3 West Florida March 9, 2004.
The second game started off almost identically to the first, with UAH scoring the game's first run in the first inning on a walk, a steal, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly. The Lady Bucs again put together a rally in the second inning, loading the bases with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat. This time, the Chargers blew it open in the fourth inning as they scored four runs and batted around. Mary Kelley started the rally with a homer to center. Four singles and a double followed, pushing more runs across the plate to extend the UAH lead to 5-0.
After UAH added another run in the sixth, the Lady Bucs finally broke through against UAH starter Whitney Gilbert.
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) drew a leadoff walk. A
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) single and an error loaded the bases.
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) drove Canizaro home with a grounder to the shortstop for a fielder's choice. After UAH tacked on another run in the seventh, the Lady Bucs manufactured another run in the bottom of the seventh.
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) reached base when she grounded into a force play for the second out after an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) single. Grooms stole second, and Canizaro drove her in with a bloop single behind first base.
Canizaro and Joiner collected two hits each for the Lady Bucs in the game.
The Lady Bucs wrap up their eight-game homestand Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they step out of GSC play to host Rogers State for a doubleheader.
