Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala.—Host West Alabama swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 6-3 before claiming an 8-0 win in the second game.
The Tigers (15-11, 5-3 GSC) scored four runs in the first two frames in the opener. They used two walks and a single to score once in the first inning, and they plated three runs on six straight singles with two out in the second.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) drove in
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) in the third to put the Lady Bucs (8-12, 4-4) on the board. Grooms was hit by a pitch with one out and scored from first on a Joiner single, but Joiner was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double, ending the inning.
Each team scored once in the fifth and sixth innings. The Lady Bucs pulled within two runs in the top of the fifth when an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) single was followed by two hit batters to load the bases, and an error allowed a run to score. A homer in the bottom half extended the UWA lead to 5-2. The Lady Bucs used two singles and two errors to score once in the top of the sixth, with
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) singling and coming home after an error on a Gracia base hit.
The Tigers used two walks and two singles to plate the game's final run in the sixth.
Gracia and Joiner collected two hits each in the game.
In the second game, UWA pitcher Jessica Brock (9-3) kept the Lady Bucs off balance all game, holding them to five singles as she tossed a six-inning shutout. She received all the run support she would need in the second, when UWA scored three runs on two walks, a double, and two singles. They tacked on three more in the fifth on two singles, a walk, and a double, and two runs in the sixth ended the game at 8-0.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when they visit West Florida. Their next home game is set for next Saturday at 1 p.m., when they host No. 2 Valdosta State for a doubleheader.
