Lady Bucs Swept at UWF

Jennifer Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, but the Lady Bucs were swept Sunday at West Florida.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla.—Host West Florida swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 10-2 and taking a 3-2 come-from-behind win in the second game.

The Lady Bucs (8-14, 4-6 GSC) struck first in the opener, when Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) was hit by a pitch and scored on a Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) single to right-center.  The Argos (22-14, 6-4) tied the game in the bottom of the second with a double and a single.  In the third, they blew the game open with five unearned runs with two out after an error, converting on two singles, two doubles, and two errors.

The Lady Bucs scored again in the fourth as Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) walked and scored on a wild pitch.  UWF scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth to end the game.

UWF pitcher Sarah Scott (7-4) held the Lady Bucs to just two hits and three walks in five innings.  Gonzalez and Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) each singled.

In game two, the Lady Bucs led for most of the game after Gonzalez belted a one-out homer to left-center in the second inning.  They extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, when infield singles by Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS), Olivia Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), and Canizaro loaded the bases with one out.  Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Story, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat.  UWF finally broke through against CBU starter Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) in the fifth inning, when they strung together three straight singles to score once.

A pair of sixth-inning doubles for the Argos tied the game, but Amanda Wade (Water Valley, Ky./Graves County HS) stranded the bases loaded after coming on in relief.  The Argos scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk with one out in the seventh inning.

Kegler and Canizaro each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs.  McEachron allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk in five and two-third innings, striking out five.

The Lady Bucs wrap up their six-game road trip Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they visit Williams Baptist.  Their next home game is set for next Saturday at 1 p.m., when they host No. 2 Valdosta State.
