Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—No. 1 Valdosta State pounded out 20 hits and scored 19 runs as they rolled to a 10-2, 9-0 sweep over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon at Bland Field.
The Blazers (29-2, 14-0 GSC) opened the scoring in the top of the third in the opener, turning a walk and three singles into two runs. An inning later they scored twice on a walk, a single, and a two-run double. They tacked on three more in the fifth before the Lady Bucs (9-17, 4-8) broke through with a two-out rally in the sixth.
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) reached on an error and came home when
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) ripped a double down the left-field line.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) singled Gonzalez home to complete the scoring for the inning. VSU added three more in the seventh to set the final margin.
Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI as VSU hurler Alanna Hadley (15-1) held CBU to no earned runs on four hits in seven innings.
In the second game, VSU again took control in the third inning, scoring five runs all on a pair of homers. They added a single run in the fourth and three in the fifth to set the final margin.
VSU pitcher Brianna Hancock (7-1) blanked the Lady Bucs on three hits and two walks. Gonzalez,
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS), and
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) each singled in the game for CBU.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host West Georgia for a doubleheader.
