Lady Bucs Split With Wolves

Allyson Grooms went 5-for-6 with two runs as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader against West Georgia Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a Sunday afternoon twinbill with West Georgia, winning the second game 4-2 after dropping a 5-2 decision in the opener.

In game two, the Wolves (10-26, 4-12) took an early 2-0 lead, turning three first-inning singles into a run and doubling their lead on a pair of third-inning singles.  The Lady Bucs (10-18, 5-9) tied the game back up in the bottom of the third.  Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) started the inning with an infield single, and singles from Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) and Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) brought Grooms home.  An error loaded the bases with one out, and a two-out wild pitch brought Gonzalez home to tie the game.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when Grooms again used her speed to spark a rally.  She reached on a one-out single to center.  After stealing second, she moved to third on a wild pitch before Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) blasted a triple to left-center.  Pinch-hitter Brynn Curtis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) earned her first RBI in a Lady Buc uniform when she hit a groundout to bring Gracia home to extend the lead to 4-2.

Pitcher Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed a perfect seventh to complete the victory.  She improves to 8-9 after allowing two runs on eight hits in the game.  Grooms went 3-for-3 with two runs for the Lady Bucs in game two.

In the first game, the Wolves also took a first-inning lead on a pair of singles.  Olivia Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) singled up the middle and came home when Gracia blasted a triple to right-center to tie the game in the third inning.  The Wolves took the lead for good in the fourth inning, when they scored twice on three walks, a single, and an error.  After an error and a single created another run in the sixth, the Lady Bucs threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After Gonzalez walked, singles from Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Rosa-Ramon loaded the bases with one out.  A bases-loaded walk to Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) brought in a run, but a flyout and a groundout ended the inning.  UWG added a final run on two doubles in the top of the seventh.

Grooms and Joiner each went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bucs in game one.

The Lady Bucs return to action Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host a doubleheader against West Florida.
