Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a twinbill at West Georgia Sunday afternoon, winning game two 10-5 after dropping the opener 5-2 in their final doubleheader of the Gulf South Conference season.
The Lady Bucs (12-29, 7-20 GSC) scored 10 runs over the first three innings in game two. After a walk to
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) and a two-base error kept the inning alive,
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) hit a two-run single up the middle to put the Lady Bucs ahead 2-0. After UWG (14-38, 6-22) scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Lady Bucs added three more in the second inning.
Olivia Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) started the rally when she was hit by a pitch with one out.
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) singled, and Grooms was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. A
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) groundout and singles by
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Rosa-Ramon extended the Lady Bucs' lead to 5-1.
UWG scored twice in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Bucs put it away in the third inning. After
Rachel Kelly (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) reached on a leadoff error,
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) singled. A sacrifice and a fielder's choice followed, cutting down Kelly at the plate trying to score. Grooms worked another walk to load the bases, allowing Gonzalez to hit a three-run single to right. Joiner followed with a two-run homer, and the Lady Bucs led 10-3. UWG scored once in the third and fifth innings to set the final margin.
For the game, Joiner went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Rosa-Ramon and Schmidt collected two hits each. Gonzalez scored three runs with four RBI, and Grooms scored three times. Rosa-Ramon added three RBI.
In the opener it was UWG who took control with an early offensive outburst. They used two singles, a double, and an error to score twice in the first inning, and they scored three runs in the second on three singles and a double.
The Lady Bucs shaved a run off the deficit in the fourth when Joiner singled and scored on a
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single, and they cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth, when Rosa-Ramon walked, moved to third on a double by Story, and scored on a Kelly sacrifice fly.
Story went 2-for-2 in the game, and Gracia was 2-for-4.
With the win in game two, the Lady Bucs clinched the No. 7 seed in the GSC Tournament next weekend at Greenbrook Park in Southaven. They wrap up the regular season Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., when they host Blue Mountain. The Lady Bucs will open GSC Tournament play Friday against No. 22 Alabama-Huntsville.
