Lady Bucs Sweep Blue Mountain On Senior Day

Shanae Farrell celebrated her Senior Day as the Lady Bucs swept Blue Mountain in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs celebrated Senior Day with a pair of wins over Blue Mountain Wednesday afternoon at Bland Field, cruising to a 13-5 win in the opener and claiming a dramatic 2-1 win in eight innings in game two.

In the opener, the Lady Bucs (14-29) scored in all five innings, with crooked numbers in four of them.  In the bottom of the first, the Lady Bucs scored five runs on three walks, two errors, a hit batter, and one single.  After the Toppers (18-28) scored four in the top of the second on four hits and a walk, the Lady Bucs answered with two more in the bottom of the second.  Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) reached on a dropped third strike to start the rally, and a bunt single by Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) kept the threat going.  A walk to Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) loaded the bases, and back-to-back hits from Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) extended the Lady Bucs' lead to 7-4.

After the Lady Bucs scored a run on two errors in the third inning, Blue Mountain added one of their own in the fourth.  A bases-loaded Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) single in the fourth-inning plated two runs to extend the lead to 10-5, and Gonzalez blasted a three-run homer over the fence in centerfield to end the game.

Joiner went 2-for-2 with two RBI.  Grooms scored three runs, and Gracia and Gonzalez scored two each.  Schmidt and Rosa-Ramon drove in two runs, and Gonzalez drove in three.

Game two was a pitchers' duel throughout, with each team scoring a third-inning run.  Blue Mountain's came on a double and a pair of groundouts, while the Lady Bucs' run came on a throwing error on a Joiner single with two on and two out.  The Lady Bucs missed several chances to take the lead, leaving a runner on third three times after tying the game.

In the eighth, Amanda Wade (Water Valley, Ky./Graves County HS) induced a flyout, an infield popout, and a soft lineout to strand the Toppers' international tiebreaker runner.  In the bottom of the inning, Joiner was placed on second to start the inning.  Rosa-Ramon sacrificed her to third, and the Toppers issued back-to-back walks to set up a force-out at any base.  After a strikeout recorded the second out, Joiner scampered home on a passed ball to give the Lady Bucs the win despite collecting just three hits in the game.

Shanae Farrell (Memphis, Tenn./Whitehaven HS) celebrated her Senior Day by doubling off the fence in left-center in the fifth inning in game two.  The Lady Bucs honored Farrell between games of the doubleheader.

The Lady Bucs return to action at Greenbrook Park in Southaven Friday morning at 11 a.m. when they open GSC Tournament play against No. 23 Alabama-Huntsville.  The Lady Bucs also play at 1:30 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament against either North Alabama or West Alabama.
