Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—Visiting West Florida swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday afternoon, claiming a come-from-behind 4-3 win in eight innings in game one before rolling to a 15-4 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Argos (27-15, 11-5 GSC) took an early lead with two first-inning runs on a walk and three singles. The Lady Bucs (10-20, 5-11) used the speed of junior outfielder
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) to tie the game. She led off the third with a bunt single, moved to third on a pair of productive outs, and scored when
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) smashed a single past third. The Lady Bucs left the bases loaded, however, remaining behind by a run. In the fourth, Grooms reached on a two-out infield single. An
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) infield single moved her to second, and
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit an RBI single to left to tie the game.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) put the Lady Bucs ahead. She hit a leadoff single up the middle and moved to third on a pair of groundouts. Canizaro hit an RBI single back up the middle to score her and give the Lady Bucs a 3-2 lead. In the seventh, however, UWF would answer, scoring a run with three straight singles to start the inning. A walk loaded the bases with none out, but
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) settled down and pitched her way out of the jam. The Argos scored the winning run in the eighth on a two-out error after Sarah Scott doubled to right-center.
Canizaro went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Grooms was 2-for-4 with two runs.
In the second game, the Argos scored three or more runs in four of the game's five innings, scoring three in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first,
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) reached on an infield single and moved to third on two errors, allowing Canizaro to hit a sacrifice fly to put CBU on the board. In the second, the Lady Bucs scored two more after
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) singled. Pinch-runner
Kaitie Gaimari (Westchester, Ill./St. Joseph HS) scored on a wild pitch, and Schmidt, who reached on a fielder's choice, came home on a Gracia RBI single.
UWF put it out of reach with four in the third and five in the fifth before the Lady Bucs mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Consecutive singles by Gonzalez,
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS), and Rosa-Ramon brought a run in, and Schmidt drew a walk to load the bases before a groundout ended the game.
Gracia and Rosa-Ramon each went 2-for-3 in the game.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host West Alabama for a GSC doubleheader.
