Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—Visiting West Alabama scored 22 runs on 24 hits as they swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon at Bland Field, winning the opener 14-1 and claiming an 8-4 win in the second game.
The Tigers (23-15, 11-7) scored all the runs game one pitcher Kristen Skinner would need with one out in the top of the first on a double, two singles, and a three-run homer. The Lady Bucs (10-22, 5-13) scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third, when
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) laid down a bunt single and scored on a bases-loaded walk to
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS).
The Tigers put it out of reach quickly, with another three-run bomb in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth as they hit for the cycle in the inning, including their third three-run homer of the game.
Seven different Lady Bucs collected one hit each in the game.
In game two, the Tigers again built a commanding lead early. A bunt single followed by an error and a pair of groundouts pushed a run across in the first, and they used three singles and an error on a dropped third strike to score three in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Lady Bucs began to rally.
Rachel Kelly (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) drew a leadoff walk, and Grooms followed with another bunt single.
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) hit an RBI single through the left side and stole second to put runners on second and third.
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) followed with a grounder to the second baseman, who tried to throw Grooms out at third but failed, loading the bases.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2, but Gracia was tagged out trying to score when the throw home was wild.
Gonzalez cut the lead to a single run in the fifth when she blasted a solo homer to center, and the Lady Bucs tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth, when
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) led off with a single. Pinch-runner
Lorin Raines (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS) moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third, scoring on a
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) single. Two more singles loaded the bases, but a foulout ended the threat.
After two quick groundouts, six straight Tigers reached in the top of the seventh on a walk, three straight infield singles, a two-run single to right, and another walk. By the time the dust settled, four runs had scored, and the Lady Bucs went in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Grooms and Gracia collected two hits each in the game, and Gonzalez drove in two runs.
The Lady Bucs play their next 10 on the road, starting with a trip to North Alabama next Saturday at 4 p.m. They wrap up the regular season at home against Blue Mountain April 25 at 2 p.m.
