Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs handed host Freed-Hardeman its first loss of the season in a 4-3 extra-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. FHU won the first game 1-0.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs (2-2) struck first with two out in the top of the first inning when they scored a run on three straight singles from
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS),
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS), and
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS). The Lady Lions (8-1) answered with a run in the second on two walks and two singles, and they took the lead with a run in the third on a single, a walk, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Bucs regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning when they plated two runs.
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) hit a leadoff single, and
Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) followed with a one-out single. An
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) bunt single loaded the bases, and the Lady Bucs scored when the Lady Lions threw home to try to force Gracia out on a
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) grounder, but Gracia beat the throw. Joiner added an RBI single to center to give the Lady Bucs the lead.
FHU used a two-out walk and a double in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The Lady Bucs cashed in their international tiebreaker runner with a wild throw on a two-out Cowan bunt, scoring
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS).
Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) stranded FHU's tiebreaker runner at third in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Joiner went 3-for-4 in the game, and Gonzalez was 2-for-4. Beekman allowed one run on two hits and two walks over five and two-thirds innings of relief.
In the opener, FHU scored a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly after two errors kept the inning alive. That was all the run support Sarah Elizabeth Cousar would need as she shut the Lady Bucs out on three hits and two walks. The Lady Bucs' biggest threat was their last one, when back-to-back two-out singles by Canizaro and Adams put runners on second and third with two out in the top of the seventh, but Cowan grounded out to end the game. Canizaro also had the Lady Bucs' first hit, in the second inning.
Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) allowed one unearned run on six hits over three and two-thirds innings, while Adams tossed two and a third scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
The Lady Bucs open GSC play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Shorter for a GSC doubleheader.
