Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss.-Host Delta State handed the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in game one and a 9-0 loss in game two to claim the sweep in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday.
DSU (9-11, 4-4 GSC) struck first in the opener with two runs in the bottom of the first on a walk and three singles. The Lady Bucs (4-8, 2-6) found the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with three runs. Back to back singles by
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) and
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) started the inning.
Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) singled with one out, and a pair of errors allowed all three runners to score.
The Lady Statesmen tied the game back up with a run on three hits in the bottom of the second, and they took the lead with a run on three hits in the third inning. The Lady Bucs regained the lead in the top of the fifth.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hit a two-out double, and
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) worked a walk. An error kept the inning alove, bringing Gonzalez in, and Canizaro hit an RBI single to left.
In the bottom of the fifth, though, the Lady Statesmen batted around, scoring four runs on four singles, a double, and a hit batter. The Lady Bucs mounted one last rally, with two out in the seventh. Back-to-back walks to Gracia and Canizaro kept the inning alive, and
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) hit an RBI single to left. An error brought in another run and put the tying run on third, but
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) lined out to short to end the game.
Cowan went 3-for-4 for the Lady Bucs, while Gracia and Canizaro each went 2-for-3 with two runs.
In the nightcap, the Lady Statesmen struck first with an Emily Todd homer in the second inning, and she hit a three-run shot as part of a six-run third inning. Two more runs in the fifth set the final margin at 9-0.
DSU held the Lady Bucs to just three hits in the game.
The Lady Bucs come home Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a non-conference twinbill against Trevecca Nazarene.
