Lady Bucs Sweep Trojans 2-1, 4-2

Marie Joiner went 5-for-6 as the Lady Bucs swept a doubleheader from visiting Trevecca Nazarene Wednesday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs held visiting Trevecca Nazarene to just three runs on the day as they swept a doubleheader, winning the first game 2-1 and claiming a 4-2 win in the second game.

In the opener, TNU (4-4) scored an unearned run in the top of the third on three singles and a passed ball. CBU (6-8) answered in the bottom of the fifth. Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) led off with a walk and moved to second on a Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) sacrifice bunt. Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) singled her home, and Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) followed with another single to move her to third. On a grounder, Gonzalez stayed in a rundown long enough to let Joiner score what proved to be the winning run.

Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) collected two hits in the game for the Lady Bucs. Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) allowed one unearned run in four innings in the start, while Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) singled, stole second, and scored on a Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) single. After TNU used a walk, a sacrifice, a wild pitch, and a single to equalize in top of the third, the Lady Bucs took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Joiner sigled to left-center and stole second, scoring on an RBI single by Gracia.

The Lady Bucs tacked on two more runs with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Grooms was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Story followed with a walk. Joiner hit a two-run double to the gap in right-center to extend the lead to 4-1. The Trojans used a pair of doubles in the seventh to set the final margin.

Joiner went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the game for the Lady Bucs, while Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts as she earned the win.

The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday at noon as they host No. 17 West Alabama for a doubleheader.
