Lady Bucs Upset No. 17 Tigers in Split

Bianca Cowan went 3-for-5 as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with No. 17 West Alabama Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against No. 17 West Alabama, upsetting the Tigers 7-4 in the second game after dropping a 3-1 decision in game one.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs (7-9, 3-7 GSC) struck early. UWA (15-6, 6-4) scored first with a run on a pair of singles. But the Lady Bucs would answer with three in the bottom of the inning. Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) led off with a single, and Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) followed with a one-out single after a sacrifice bunt. A pair of wild pitches brought Joiner home and pushed Rosa-Ramon to third, where she scored on a Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) groundout. Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) hit an RBI single to score Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS), who reached on a walk.

Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) doubled and scored on a Joiner sacrifice fly in the second, and the Lady Bucs tacked on three more runs in the third inning. Rosa-Ramon and Gonzalez singled to start the inning, and Fernandez loaded the bases when she reached on a sacrifice bunt as UWA failed to retire Rosa-Ramon at third. Gracia hit an RBI single to score Rosa-Ramon, and Schmidt capped the rally with a two-run single to give CBU a 7-1 advantage.

UWA scored three runs in the seventh on a single, a hit batter, and two two-out doubles.

Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) earned the win, allowing four runs on nine hits as she went the distance, striking out five against no walks. Rosa-Ramon, Gracia, and Schmidt collected two hits each, with Gonzalez and Rosa-Ramon scoring twice and Gracia and Schmidt driving in two runs each.

The Lady Bucs took a late lead in the first game, breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) singled and scored on back-to-back singles by Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) and Gracia. UWA answered with two runs in the sixth on two singles and a double. They tacked on another in the seventh with a double and a single.

Cowan and Canizaro each went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bucs in the game.

The win was the Lady Bucs' first over a nationally-ranked opponent in eight tries since defeating No. 5 Alabama-Huntsville March 19, 2012.

The Lady Bucs host Alabama-Huntsville for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at 1 p.m.
