Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Visiting Alabama-Huntsville swept a pair of close games from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 6-4 and claiming a 4-1 win in the second tilt.
In the opener, UAH (14-10, 7-3 GSC) exploded for four runs in the first inning on a hit batter, a walk, two doubles, and a single, and they used a single, a stolen base, a sacrifice, and an error to plate a run in the top of the second to take a 5-0 edge.
The Lady Bucs (7-11, 3-9) answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. Three straight singles by
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS),
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS), and
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) loaded the bases with none out.
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) followed with an RBI single to center. After a force out at home,
Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS) singled to right to bring another run in, and
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) laid down a two-out squeeze bunt to bring the Lady Bucs within a 5-4 margin.
UAH pitching kept the Lady Bucs in check the rest of the way, however, as Kimberly Jack only allowed three singles in five and a third innings of scoreless relief. UAH tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a homer by Courtney McNett.
Canizaro and Rosa-Ramon each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs, and Cowan went 2-for-4.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when Rosa-Ramon singled to right and scored on a two-out
Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) double to left-center. But UAH answered in the third inning with a three-run McNett homer. They added a run in the sixth on a two-out wild pitch after two walks and an infield single loaded the bases.
Gonzalez and
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) each went 2-for-3 in the second game.
The Lady Bucs hit the road Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they visit North Alabama for a GSC doubleheader. Their next home game is Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against West Florida.
