Lady Hawks Sweep Lady Bucs in GSC Opener

Taylor Rosa-Ramon went 2-for-4 with a double and a run in the Lady Bucs' 7-1 loss to Shorter in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Shorter won the nightcap 10-0.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-Visiting Shorter swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs on a cold, snowy day at Bland Field in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools, winning the first game 7-1 before claiming a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

The Lady Hawks (11-1, 2-0 GSC) never trailed, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a walk, two singles, and a wild pitch. A double and a single in the third stretched the lead to 3-0 before the Lady Bucs (2-4, 0-2) scored what would be their only run of the day. Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) doubled to right with two out in the third inning, and Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hit a single to right to bring her home. The Lady Bucs stranded four runners in scoring position but could never break through again.

The Lady Hawks scored three runs with one out in the fifth on two doubles, a walk, and a single. Two singles and a double in the sixth brought another run in to set the final margin at 7-1.

Gonzalez, Rosa-Ramon, and Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) collected two hits each in the game for the Lady Bucs.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs squandered a golden opportunity with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning. The game remained scoreless into the third inning, when Shorter used a homer, a single, and a critical error to score a pair of runs.  They tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a single, a walk, and a triple, and they sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run fifth inning that blew the game open.

Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs.

The Lady Bucs host West Georgia in a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
