Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala.-No. 24 North Alabama swept the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs in a pair of one-run games Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 6-5 in eight innings and claiming a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
For the first seven innings of the opener, the teams matched scores inning for inning. In the third, the Lady Bucs (7-13, 3-11 GSC) scored twice to take the lead. Back-to-back singles by
Bianca Cowan (Byhalia, Miss./Center Hill HS) and
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) put runners on the corners with one out.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the Lions (23-9, 8-6) failed to get Cowan out at the plate.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) hit an RBI single to left to score Story after Joiner was erased on a fielder's choice, giving the Lady Bucs a 2-0 edge.
In the bottom of the inning, the Lions used a walk, a double, and a single to bring two in to tie the game at 2. The game remained 2-2 until the fifth, when each team scored three times. In the top of the inning,
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) hit a single to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, a Joiner single scored her. Joiner would score on a Story single, and after a passed ball, Story came home on another Gonzalez single. UNA used a double and a single to start the fifth inning, and they tied the game on a three-run bomb by Mallory Patterson. UNA scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk after an error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases with one out.
Gonzalez and Joiner went 2-for-4, with Gonzalez driving in two runs. Story scored twice and drove in two runs.
In the second game, the Lions opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth on a leadoff homer and a run on three singles. CBU took advantage of three errors to score three times in the top of the fifth inning. A
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) walk and an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) bunt single started the rally. Schmidt reached on an error, and a second error on the play brought Canizaro home and sent Gracia to third. Cowan reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Gracia, and Schmidt scored when Joiner reached on another error.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the inning to set the final score, plating two runs on an error, a double, and a single.
The Lady Bucs come home Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. to host West Florida. They host No. 3 Valdosta State Sunday at noon.
