Jennifer Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer as the Lady Bucs won game two at West Georgia 7-6. UWG won the opener 2-1.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga.–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs held on for a dramatic 7-6 win in Friday's second game at West Georgia to earn a split after dropping the first game 2-1.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs (8-14, 4-12 GSC) never trailed, scoring four in the third to take an early lead. Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on a fielder's choice as the Wolves (11-20, 4-14) failed to retire Grooms at second, and Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) followed with an RBI single. Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) capped the inning with a three-run homer to center to put the Lady Bucs on top 4-0.

The Wolves cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice on two doubles and two sacrifice bunts. But the bottom of the CBU order again created a rally in the fourth inning, starting with back-to-back singles by Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) and Grooms. Joiner followed with a two-run double to left-center, giving the Lady Bucs a 6-2 edge.

The Wolves scored two in the fifth on a two-run homer by Katie Shultes, and the Lady Bucs scored what proved to be a vital insurance run in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles and an error put Gonzalez and Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) on first and third with no outs. Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit a grounder off home plate, bouncing high to allow Gonzalez to score from third.

In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Wolves grounded out, but a walk and an error kept the inning alive. An infield single loaded the bases, and another walk brought UWG within a 7-5 margin. Leadoff hitter Haley Richards singled to center, scoring one run, but Grooms threw Megan Garcia out at home to prevent the tying run from scoring and end the game.

Grooms, Gonzalez, Joiner, and Canizaro collected two hits each in the game, with Joiner driving in a pair and Gonzalez collecting two runs and three RBI. Grooms also scored twice.

In the opener, UWG scored twice on three singles and a double in the second inning, giving Shultes all the run support she would need. Joiner scored the Lady Bucs' lone run in the sixth, when Joiner doubled and scored on a Rosa-Ramon groundout.

Joiner went 2-for-3 in the game, and Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, retiring nine of the ten batters she faced as she allowed only one walk.

The Lady Bucs travel to Rome, Ga., tomorrow for a noon doubleheader at Shorter. Their next home game is Saturday, April 6, when they host a twinbill against Union at 1 p.m.
