Box Score 2 ROME, Ga.–Host Shorter swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon, rallying to win the opener 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh and rolling to an 8-0 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (8-16, 4-14 GSC) took the lead in the top of the third inning after Shorter (29-5, 15-3) scored once in the bottom of the first on a double and a two-out wild pitch.
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) started the CBU rally with a one-out single, and
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) followed with a walk. After a
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) sacrifice bunt,
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) hit a two-run single to put the Lady Bucs ahead 2-1.
The Lady Hawks used a homer, a walk, two singles, and a sac fly to regain a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Bucs again answered in the top of the fifth. Grooms hit a one-out single and scored on an RBI double by Joiner to tie the game. The Lady Bucs couldn't capitalize on an error in the top of the seventh, stranding the go-ahead run on third. Shorter used a single and two walks to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, and Sarah Corn's RBI single won the game.
Grooms and Joiner each went 2-for-3 in the game, with Grooms scoring twice. Rosa-Ramon collected two RBI.
The Lady Hawks scored in four of the six innings in the second game, rolling to victory. Two singles, a walk, and a pair of groundouts led to two first-inning runs. A two-out error allowed another run to score in the second inning. They added a run in the fourth and four in the sixth to claim the 8-0 margin.
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they open a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Union.
