Lady Bulldogs Edge Lady Bucs in Sweep

Jennifer Gonzalez was 4-for-7, but the Lady Bucs were swept at Union Wednesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JAKSON, Tenn.-Host Union swept a doubleheader fromt he Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 7-5 in nine innings before claiming a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Lady Bucs (4-6, 2-4 GSC) took an early lead with a pair of first-inning runs after Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on back to back errors. Joiner scored when Story reached on an error, and Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) drove Story in with a one-out single up the middle.

The Lady Bulldogs (6-6, 2-4) answered with three in the bottom of the second, when Sam Giesler followed back-to-back singles with a three-run shot to left.  The Lady Bucs tied it in the fifth, when Gonzalez singled and scored on a Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) base hit.

Union regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Carter Mansolino homer, and they tacked on another run in the sixth on a wal, a sacrifice bunt, and a single. The Lady Bucs rallied in the seventh, loadng the bases with two out before an error allowed two more runs to come home. The score remained 5-5 until the ninth, when Mansolino worked a two-out walk and Caylee Crews blasted a walkoff homer.

Gonzalez went 3-for-4 in the game for the Lady Bucs, and Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) collected two hits.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bucs again opened the scoring, this time in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Story, bringing Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) to the plate after a one-out single. After Union scored on a hit batter, two walks, and a grounodut in the fourth, the Lady Bus answered in the fifth whn Gonzalez reached on an error and scored on another error.

The lead held up until the sixth, when Union sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs on four singles, two errors, and a walk to take the lead for good.

The Lady Bucs hit the road Saturday for a twinbill at Delta State at 2 p.m. Their next home game is set for Wednesday, March 13, against Trevecca Nazarene.
