Box Score 2 MEMPHIS–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Delta State, rallying for a 2-1 win in 10 innings in the opener and winning the second game 5-1.
Pitching dominated the opener, with neither team scoring for the first nine innings. The Lady Bucs (11-19, 7-17 GSC) threatened to score repeatedly, with a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score in the first inning and with eight runners stranded in scoring position, but they were unable to solve DSU (15-25, 8-16) pitcher Brittany Gonzales.
Meanwhile,
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) flummoxed the DSU offense, holding them to three hits over the first nine innings and only allowing one runner to reach second base.
In the 10th, DSU used a one-out single to score their international tiebreaker runner, but McEachron pitched around the jam to hold the Lady Statesmen to one run. In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Bucs were unable to get a bunt down to advance CBU tiebreaker runner
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS), and
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) flew out to right to move Joiner to third. After a walk to
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS),
Tiari-Jay Fernandez (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) smoked a single up the middle to score Joiner and move Gonzalez to third. Gonzalez came home for the winning run as
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) singled on a flare into shallow right field.
Joiner, Rosa-Ramon, and
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) collected two hits each for the Lady Bucs. McEachron allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk over 10 innings.
In the second game, Fernandez put the Lady Bucs on the board as she singled up the middle to lead off the second inning and scored on an
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) double to right-center. DSU used a single, a stolen base, and another single to score the tying run in the top of the third. The game remained tied until the fifth, when the Lady Bucs blew it open.
Gracia led off with a bunt single, and throwing error put Joiner on with no outs.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) laid down a bunt single to load the bases, and a missed catch error at the plate allowed Gracia to score the go-ahead run on DSU's second error of the inning, leaving the bases loaded. A Gonzalez single to right extended the CBU lead to 3-1, and a wild pitch and a throwing error allowed two more runs to score, giving CBU a commanding 5-1 lead after five innings.
Kim Adams (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) earned the win in game two, allowing one run on nine hits with no walks. Story and Schmidt collected two hits each in the game.
The Lady Bucs finish the regular season with eight straight road games, beginning next weekend as they visit West Alabama Saturday at 2 p.m. and Alabama-Huntsville Sunday at 1 p.m.
Before the first game, CBU honored its four seniors,
Brynn Curtis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS),
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS),
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), and
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS).
