Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga.–No. 4 Valdosta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to end the regular season Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 9-1 and claiming a 10-3 win in the second game.
In the opener, VSU (37-9, 22-7 GSC) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. They added another run in the second inning before the Lady Bucs (11-28, 7-25) scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.
Allyson Grooms (Buena Vista, Tenn./Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central HS) singled to left to lead off the inning.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) sacrificed her to second, and a
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) single pushed her to third.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) reached on an error to score Grooms and cut the deficit to 4-1. VSU put it away with a five-run fifth inning to set the final margin.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs scored twice in the top of the first inning. Grooms led off with a single to left, and Story reached on an error. Joiner followed with an RBI single to plate Grooms, and
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) singled Story home to give CBU a 2-0 edge. The Blazers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, however, on three singles and a double. They added another run in the second to take a 4-2 lead before the Lady Bucs trimmed the lead to one run again in the third. Consecutive singles by Story, Joiner, and Gonzalez loaded the bases with none out, and a one-out
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) squeeze bunt scored Story to cut the VSU lead to 4-3.
VSU scored four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to set the final margin.
Story, Grooms, and Gonzalez collected two hits each in the game for the Lady Bucs.
The Lady Bucs earned the No. 7 seed in the GSC Tournament, which will be held next weekend at Greenbrook Park in Southaven. The Lady Bucs will open Friday morning at 11 a.m. against VSU, who earned the No. 2 seed. CBU will also play at 1:30 p.m. against either No. 3 seed North Alabama or No. 6 seed Delta State.
