Box Score 2 MEMPHIS–Visiting Union hit seven home runs Monday afternoon to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs, winning the first game 7-1 and claiming an 8-3 win in game two.
In the opener, Union (16-14, 11-13 GSC) hit two-run homers in each of the first three innings to take control quickly, adding a seventh run in the third inning on a single and a double.
The Lady Bucs (9-19, 5-17) scored a run in the bottom of the second as
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) single.
Nikki Story (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) went 2-for-4 in the game for CBU, while
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) tossed four scoreless innings of relief.
In the second game, Union blasted back-to-back homers in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead, and they extended it to 5-0 with a third-inning two-run homer and 6-0 on a solo shot to lead off the fourth.
The Lady Bucs cut the lead in half in the sixth inning as they batted around.
Marie Joiner (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) led off with an infield single, and Story drew a walk.
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) hit an RBI single to right, and
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out. After an out at the plate on a force play,
Sammi Canizaro (Nesbit, Miss./Horn Lake HS) hit a slow roller that scored a run when Union tried for the out at home and failed.
Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) reached on an error to keep the inning alive and bring in another run, but two more outs ended the threat.
Union added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a walk and three singles to set the final margin.
Joiner went 2-for-4 in the game for CBU.
The Lady Bucs play their final home games of the season Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they host a doubleheader against Delta State.
