LIVINGSTON, Ala.-After digging a deep early hole, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won in five sets at West Alabama Saturday morning to complete a perfect 3-0 week.
The Lady Bucs (10-8, 8-5 GSC) scored the first point of the match, but UWA (7-11, 6-7) scored the next 10 to take a commanding 10-1 lead, which they would extend en route to a 25-11 win in the first set. In the second set it was CBU who started with a bang, taking a 10-1 lead of their own and holding on to win 25-22 to even the match. The Lady Bucs took control of the match with a 25-20 win in the third set, but UWA used a late six-point run to take a 23-15 lead en route to a 25-18 win in the fourth set and force a decisive fifth set. The Lady Bucs jumped to a quick 8-1 lead in the fifth set and never allowed the Tigers closer than three points in a 15-8 win to complete the match.
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .313 with 15 kills and three blocks to lead the CBU offense, and
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) notched 14 kills with 10 digs and four aces.
Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) had 11 kills as well as five digs, three blocks and two aces.
Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) logged a team-high 15 digs, and
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) added 11.
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) dished out 43 assists with 11 digs.
Sadie Beam led the Tigers with 16 kills. Lindsey Ball had 22 digs, and Sam Burgess collected a team-high 24 assists.
The Lady Bucs hit the road again next weekend as they travel to Winter Park, Fla., to play against four Sunshine State Conference foes in the SSC/GSC Crossover. Friday they face Lynn and Barry, and Saturday they will take on Florida Tech and host Rollins. CBU's next home match is Friday night, Oct. 24, as they host West Florida.
