WINTER PARK, Fla.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost both matches in the SSC/GSC Crossover Friday at Rollins, falling in five sets to Lynn Friday morning before dropping a three-setter to Barry Friday afternoon.
CBU (10-10) claimed an early advantage against Lynn (8-8), scoring four of the final five points in the first set to rally for a 25-23 win. In the second set, the Fighting Knights returned the favor, scoring 12 of the final 14 points to win the second set 25-16 after CBU had led as late as 14-13. Lynn again finished strong in the third set, scoring four of the final five for a 26-24 win after CBU had led 23-22. In the fourth set, CBU took an early 11-6 lead and held on, eventually winning 26-24 to force a fifth set. Lynn dominated the final set, however, scoring 10 of the final 13 points to win 15-7 after a back-and-forth start.
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) led the CBU offense with 14 kills in the set, while
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) notched 13 kills and 10 digs.
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had 44 assists and 17 digs, and
Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) collected a career-best 18 digs.
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) had eight kills to go with a team-high 20 digs for CBU.
Elyse Fleck paced the Knights with 18 kills. Marissa Tandron had 50 assists, and Nikki Haben garnered a match-best 31 digs.
In the day's second match, Barry (11-8) jumped to a 15-2 lead in the first set en route to a 25-9 win over the Lady Bucs. In the second set, Barry used a 5-1 run midway through the set to take a 17-13 lead after the set had been tied at 12, going on to win 25-20. In the third set, Barry built a 9-3 lead and held on for another 25-20 win to complete the sweep.
Gillis led CBU with seven kills in the match, while Toney, Chipman and Sorensen tied for the team-high with six digs. Gruse dished out 24 assists.
Laine Cielena had 11 kills to pace Barry. Jenny Trinidad had 36 assists, and Jasmine Serna collected a match-high 13 digs.
The Lady Bucs play twice Saturday, taking on Florida Tech at noon and battling host Rollins at 4 p.m. Their next home match is next Friday night at 7 p.m. as they host West Florida.
