Lady Bucs Rally for Split in Crossover

WINTER PARK, Fla.-After dropping their first five sets Saturday in the SSC/GSC Crossover, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied for a five-set win over host Rollins to salvage a split for the day.

In the nightcap, Rollins (13-9) won the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores to take control of the match. In the third set, they took a 14-11 lead and appeared headed for a sweep, but the Lady Bucs (11-11) outscored them 14-6 the rest of the set to win 25-20. Facing match point down 24-23 in the fourth set, the Lady Bucs used back-to-back kills by Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) and Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) to take a 25-24 lead. After a kill by Rollins, CBU scored the final two points on errors to win the set 27-25 and force a decisive fifth set. CBU hit .207 in the fifth set as they went on to win 15-10 and claim the match.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) pounded a team-high 14 kills with 24 digs for the Lady Bucs. Cooper added 12 kills, hitting a team-high .250, while Toney added 11 kills and 14 digs. Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) and 10 kills and 12 digs. Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) collected 24 assists with 12 digs, while Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) tacked on 20 assists. Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) garnered a team-high 27 digs.

Jessica Wilson paced Rollins with 19 kills. Collin Welsch had 34 digs, and MaryEllen Pole dished out 26 assists.

In the opener, Florida Tech (9-13) swept the Lady Bucs 26-24, 25-14, 25-20.

Toney led CBU with seven kills to go with 12 digs. Gillis matched her seven kills and added 14 digs, while Chipman matched Gillis for team-high honors with 14 digs. Gruse dished out 18 assists.

Marilyn Dick led the Panthers with 12 kills. Ashton Truesdale had 39 assists, and Becca Bower logged a match-high 19 digs.

The Lady Bucs return to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Alabama-Huntsville. Their next home match is Friday night at 7 p.m., when they host West Florida.
