Lady Bucs Sweep UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night to climb into sole possession of fifth place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

UAH (14-8, 8-6 GSC) jumped to early leads of 5-1 and 9-4 in the first set, but the Lady Bucs (12-11, 9-5) battled back to a 15-15 tie on the strength of a four-point run. UAH regained a 22-20 lead late, but the Lady Bucs scored the final five points to win 25-22, capped by a Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) kill. The Lady Bucs finished the second set strong as well, scoring four of the final five points to win 25-21.

In the third set, the Lady Bucs used a 6-2 burst to take a 12-8 lead on a Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) ace. A four-point run later in the set, also with Chipman serving, extended the CBU lead to 22-16, but then UAH mounted a comeback, tying the set with a six-point run of their own. After CBU scored twice to reach match point at 24-22, UAH scored the next three more to take a 25-24 lead and reach set point themselves. But three straight kills by Toney gave CBU a 27-25 win to complete the sweep.

Toney pounded a match-best 15 kills to go with seven digs and two blocks, while Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) tacked on 14 kills, eight digs, three blocks and two aces. Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .500 with 12 kills. Chipman notched a match-high 12 digs, and Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had 45 assists.

Haley Snyder and Olivia Bauman led UAH with 10 kills each. Kennedie Lariscy collected 12 digs, and Ashton Baker picked up 32 assists.

The win sets up a crucial home weekend for the Lady Bucs, who are in sole possession of fifth place at 9-5 with six matches remaining. Shorter leads the conference at 12-1, followed by a tie for second place between West Florida and Valdosta State at 10-3. North Alabama is fourth at 10-4. CBU has won seven of its last eight GSC matches after a 2-4 start.

The Lady Bucs host West Florida Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match Saturday afternoon against Valdosta State, when they will celebrate Senior Day.
