MEMPHIS-All six starters recorded at least six kills as the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs celebrated Senior Day with a three-set sweep of second-place Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
The Lady Bucs (13-12, 10-6 GSC) survived a first set that saw 13 ties and four lead changes, seizing control with a three-point run after a 19-19 tie and holding on for a 25-23 win. CBU hit .344 in the second set as they cruised to a 25-20 win. A four-point run gave them a 13-10 lead they would never relinquish, and they never allowed VSU (16-7, 11-4) closer than two points again. In the third set, the Lady Bucs opened a 19-12 lead with a six-point run capped by a
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) kill, and they held on to win 25-18 to complete the sweep.
Cooper led CBU with 11 kills and five blocks, hitting .440 in the process.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added seven kills with 10 digs, while
Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS),
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS),
Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) and
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) added six kills each. Gruse dished out 33 assists with four blocks, while
Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) notched 13 digs.
Nicole Higgins and Jenna Kirkwood paced the Lady Blazers with nine kills each. Ashley Lala collected 13 digs, and Jessica Codato picked up 29 assists.
The Lady Bucs hit .257 as a team for the match.
With the win, the Lady Bucs remain in fifth place in the GSC standings, a game and a half behind VSU and North Alabama, who are tied for third place at 11-4. CBU has now won eight of its last 10 GSC matches after a 2-4 start.
CBU honored its two seniors, Gruse and Toney, before the match.
The Lady Bucs return to action when they play their final home match of the season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Mississippi College. They finish the season with four straight on the road, finishing at first-place Shorter Nov. 8.
