Lady Bucs Sweep Lady Flames

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won their fourth straight match Friday night as they swept Lee in three sets.

In the first set, Lee (5-8, 3-5 GSC) took an early 9-5 lead, but the Lady Bucs (7-7, 5-4) answered with three quick aces, two by Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and one by Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) as they clawed back into it. CBU finished the set with 13 of the final 15 points as they pulled away to win 25-17. In the second set, Lee again took an early lead, but the Lady Bucs used a four-point run with Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) serving to take an 11-10 lead, and they never trailed again, winning the set 25-21. The Lady Bucs finished the third set strong, scoring nine of the final 10 points to claim a 25-16 win and complete the sweep. Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) pounded kills for three of the final four points to clinch the victory. CBU hit .531 in the final set of the match.

Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) paced the Lady Bucs with nine kills,  four blocks and a .600 hitting percentage, while Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added eight kills and seven digs. Toney collected seven kills and six digs, and Gruse dished out 29 assists with a team-high nine digs, three aces and three blocks.

Brooke Wilsman led Lee with nine kills. Stephanie Hernandez notched a match-high 14 digs, and Haley Foote led the Lady Flames with 16 assists.

The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host first-place Shorter for the final match of the first half of their GSC schedule.
