MEMPHIS-First-place Shorter edged the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs in four sets Saturday afternoon in a match where each set was decided by just two points.
The Lady Hawks (11-2, 9-0 GSC) took an early lead as they survived a 26-24 marathon first set where neither team led by more than three points. In the second set, Shorter appeared to have the set in hand with a 23-18 lead, the largest for either team in the match. But the Lady Bucs (7-8, 5-5) answered with four straight points to close within 23-22 before Shorter won the set 25-23. In the third set it was CBU who held the lead for much of the set, but the Lady Hawks retook a 20-19 lead. CBU answered with three straight points to take a 22-20 lead on back-to-back kills by
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS), but SU tied it at 23 after back-to-back kills of their own. The Lady Bucs iced it with the final two points to win the set 25-23. After trailing 23-22 in the fourth set, back-to-back kills from Gillis gave the Lady Bucs a 24-23 lead and a chance at set point, but the Lady Hawks escaped, eventually scoring the final three pints to win 28-26 and claim the victory. In all, the four sets featured 52 ties and 24 lead changes.
Gillis logged season-highs of 18 kills and 19 digs and a .462 hitting percentage.
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) added 10 kills and 12 digs, while
Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) collected 13 digs.
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) dished out 35 assists to go with 15 digs.
Shorter featured a balanced attack with five players reaching double-figures in kills. Jasmine Crook and Elizabeth Dowd led the way with 12 kills each, and Crook logged 19 digs to Dowd's 18. Dena Pierce and Cheyenne Frady garnered 27 assists each.
The Lady Bucs open the second half of the GSC schedule Tuesday night at 7 as they host North Alabama.
