Lady Bucs Sweep Henderson in Non-Conference Finale

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a bang Thursday night as they swept Henderson State in three sets.

The Lady Bucs (15-12) jumped to a 14-7 lead in the first set and never looked back, winning 25-20. In the second set, CBU withstood a late HSU (4-24) rally as HSU battled back to a 24-24 tie after the Lady Bucs had led 21-16. Back-to-back kills by Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) and Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) gave CBU a 26-24 win in the set. In the third set, the Lady Bucs out-scored HSU 12-5 after their early lead had been cut to 13-12, eventually winning 25-17 to complete the sweep.

Gillis led the Lady Bucs with 14 kills, while Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) pounded 11 kills and hit .435. Sorensen and Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) logged nine kills each, with Sorensen adding 10 digs. Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) garnered a match-best 16 digs, while Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) dished out 51 assists with 15 digs. CBU hit .317 as a team for the match.

Jessica Moss led the Lady Reddies with 16 kills. Andjela Reijic had a team-high 14 digs, and Ryleigh Thompson led HSU with 20 assists.

The Lady Bucs return to GSC play next weekend with three road games. Tuesday night they visit Union, followed by a Friday night match at Lee and a Saturday afternoon tilt at Shorter. The GSC Tournament will be held Nov. 11-16.
