Lady Bucs Rally Past Bulldogs in Four Sets

JACKSON, Tenn.-After dropping the first set, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs ralied to win the final three sets as they won their fourth straight match Tuesday night at Union.

In the opening set, Union (8-22, 3-15 GSC) finished strong, pulling away to a 25-20 win after CBU (16-12, 12-6) had cut their lead to 15-14. The Lady Bucs answered by jumping to an 8-1 lead in the second set, holding on for a 25-21 win to even the match. CBU blitzed Union for a 25-10 win in the third set, and after being tied 14-all in the fourth set, the Lady Bucs pulled away to win 25-17 on a Maggie Sorensen (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) kill to clinch victory.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, 15 digs and four aces, adding three blocks. Sorensen added 10 kills with five digs, and Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) logged eight kills and a team-high six blocks. Demi Chipman (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) garnered 13 digs, and Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) added 11 digs to her 39 assists.

Savannah Hughes led Union with nine kills. Lydia Wright notched 13 digs, and Hannah Huguley collected 16 assists.

With the win, the Lady Bucs clinch a winning season for the sixth time in the last seven years. They remain fifth in the GSC with a 12-6 record, trailing fourth-place North Alabama (14-6) and third-place Valdosta State (14-4). CBU wraps up the regular season this weekend as they visit Lee Friday night at 6 p.m. and first-place Shorter Saturday at noon.
